Alternate Replacement Examples

Example 1: A player who qualified at Site X subsequently withdraws from the championship. The 1st Alternate from Site X is contacted to fill that spot.

a) If the 1st Alternate from Site X accepts, no additional action is needed. The player who is the 2nd Alternate is now considered the highest ranked alternate from that site. The site’s spot on the Reallotment List does not change.

b) If the 1st Alternate from Site X declines, the 2nd Alternate is contacted to fill the spot. If that player accepts the spot, there are no additional alternates from Site X and the site is exhausted.

c) If both the 1st and 2nd Alternates from Site X decline, the spot is filled using the USGA Alternate Procedure and the site is exhausted.

Example 2: An exempt player withdraws from the championship following the close of entries. Site Y is currently the highest ranked site on the reallotment list at the time of the withdrawal.

a) The 1st Alternate from Site Y is contacted to fill the spot. If the 1st Alternate accepts, Site Y is moved to the bottom of the reallotment list and the player who is the 2nd Alternate is now considered the highest ranked alternate from that site, which is now at the bottom of the list. The 2nd alternate will still be contacted for replacement of a player who qualified out of Site Y.

b) If the 1st Alternate from Site Y declines, the 2nd Alternate is contacted to fill the spot. If that player accepts the spot, Site Y is removed from the reallotment list as there are no alternates left from that site and the site is exhausted.

c) If both the 1st and 2nd Alternates from Site Y decline, Site Y is removed from the reallotment list and the process is repeated using the next highest ranked site on the reallotment list. Site Y is exhausted.

Example 3: A player who qualified at Site Z subsequently becomes exempt.

a) The 1st Alternate from Site Z is contacted to fill that spot. If the 1st Alternate from Site Z accepts, no additional action is needed. The player who is the 2nd Alternate is now considered the highest ranked alternate from that site. The site does not move on the Reallotment List.

b) If the 1st Alternate from Site Z declines, the 2nd Alternate is contacted to fill the spot. If that player accepts the spot, there are no additional alternates from Site Z and site Z is exhausted.

c) If both the 1st and 2nd Alternates from Site Z decline, the spot is filled using the USGA Alternate Procedure and Site Z is exhausted.

Example 4: An exempt player withdraws the morning of the first round of Stroke Play, one hour prior to the first starting time.

Starting 45-minutes prior to the first starting time, USGA staff on-site will attempt to replace the withdrawn player with an on-site alternate.

The alternate whose site is ranked highest on the Reallotment List will be notified of their place in the field. This could be a 1st alternate or a 2nd alternate, depending on who is present from the highest-ranked site on the list.

If the 1st alternate from the 1st site on the Reallotment List is present, they will be notified of their place in the field. If the 1st alternate from the 1st site on the Reallotment List is not present, but the 2nd alternate from that same site is present, they will be notified of their spot in the field. Priority is given based on the site’s position on the Reallotment List, with 1st alternates taking priority over 2nd alternates from their same site only.
